On behalf of the board and staff of The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, we congratulate our AVDF President Nancy Cable on her appointment to become the 8th Chancellor of UNC Asheville. The AVDF trustees and staff are deeply grateful to Dr. Cable for her transformative leadership during the past six years. We wish her great success as she returns to academia to lead the liberal arts institution of the very fine UNC system of universities.
Since October 2012, Dr. Cable has worked tirelessly with the AVDF Board to define trustee generational succession, to strengthen governance and fiscal policies and practice, and to craft a new trustee philanthropic strategic plan. She has built a strong office and staff infrastructure and updated internal policies for both the board and the staff. Dr. Cable’s leadership has prepared AVDF for the future by leading the trustees through a series of informative context briefings with established grantees that resulted in a comprehensive strategic plan that defines the AVDF philanthropic programs and priorities for the years ahead.
The AVDF Board of Trustees has launched a national search for AVDF’s next President. The search committee is committed to securing a dynamic leader with a vision for building on Dr. Cable’s exceptional leadership of the Foundations’ grantmaking and trustee development. Dr. Cable will continue to serve as President of AVDF and will help to launch the presidential search to facilitate a seamless transition. Beginning October 1, 2018, Dr. Dale Knobel, former president of Denison University and currently Senior Fellow in Higher Education at AVDF, will serve as Interim President. He will work with the trustees and a talented staff to sustain the mission and grantmaking of the Foundations until we welcome our new leader in early 2019.
