The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations seeks an exceptional and experienced individual to serve in the newly created role of Senior Program Officer.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Senior Program Officer works with the Director and the President to oversee activity in all of the Foundations’ Program Areas. This involves oversight of the open submission process, including review of Letters of Intent and Full Proposals, and monitoring financial and narrative reports, as well as change requests. In addition, the Senior Program Officer works with the Director and the President to oversee the development and execution of strategic plans within each Program Area. This includes research on possible strategic priorities, development of proactive proposals, and assessment of work completed. In addition, The Senior Program Officer will make site visits to prospective grantees to develop new projects and to current grantees to monitor active grants, and will travel to attend professional conferences. In addition, the Senior Program Officer will work with other AVDF staff to produce materials that publicize the work of the Foundations through a recurring newsletter, the website, and other public facing resources. Finally, the Senior Program Officer will provide support to the Board of Trustees’ program-related working groups and its Next Generation Committee. Occasional travel will be required in this position.

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

  • Oversee the Open Submission grantmaking process in conjunction with other staff.
  • Work with the Director and President to design and implement strategic priorities within the Foundations’ Program Areas.
  • Represent the Foundations in relationships with current and prospective grantees.
  • Review and analyze information, trends, and issues of importance to the Foundations as they relate to program goals and potential grants.
  • Evaluate interim and final reports submitted by grantees in order to assess the educational value and impact of grant activities and to inform future grantmaking activities of the Foundations.
  • Prepare written and visual materials related to grants for Board of Trustees meetings.
  • Make presentations to the Board of Trustees about grants and relevant program updates.
  • Oversee grant and program related communications, including standard messaging for inquiries from potential and current grantees, the Foundations’ website, online grant portal, annual report, and the trustee newsletter.


  • Bachelor’s Degree required; advanced or professional degree preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in philanthropy with a knowledge of grantmaking best practices preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, meet deadlines, and take initiative to pursue work, share ideas, assist others and resolve issues and challenges.
  • Strong analytical skills, problem solving skills, and ability to process and synthesize information and data.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals from a diverse range of fields and backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel.
