The disruptive protests and encampments that broke out in 2024 made it clear that today’s college campuses struggle to promote constructive engagement across lines of difference. These events followed years of survey data showing that a majority of students withhold their private opinions, and many faculty avoid contentious topics, for fear of reprisal. The Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) has established itself as a leading organization that helps campuses transform their climates into learning environments that promote dialogue and free expression. During the grant period, CDI will build upon their current work by pursuing the following key activities: (1) continue to expand and test a suite of evidence-based tools to support civil discourse in higher education; (2) scale their programs to 250 campuses across the country; and (3) conduct original research and thought leadership to inform the field. Through these activities, CDI aims to help improve the state of discourse in higher education and prepare a generation of students for democratic citizenship.
