In today’s challenging times, recent research demonstrates the clear dangers of misperceptions and “false polarization,” an overestimation of political and ideological differences, while underestimating others’ willingness to engage. Initial data from Michigan State (MSU) suggests similar problems on campus, at a pivotal time in students’ lives. This project will measure and correct these misperceptions among an MSU student body of 50,000. It will begin with a campus-wide formative survey to identify relevant student perceptions and norms. The grantee will then apply the Social Norms Approach, an evidence-based strategy grounded in decades of research, by developing and deploying a social norms marketing campaign fit for MSU’s campus, displayed via posters, digital images, table tents, and other materials. A follow-up evaluative survey will assess campaign awareness; cross-ideological perceptions, conversation intention, and conversation reported frequency; and impacts on democratic citizenship. This project aims to both improve the environment for civil discourse at MSU, and serve as a model for other campuses, ultimately targeting many of the 19 million US college students. The grantee will conduct outreach to help other universities undertake similar campaigns based on this project’s results.
