Narrative analyses and cognitive research show that too much negative news can lead to apathy and despair, while positive, solutions-oriented media inspires hope and action. Yet climate media overwhelmingly focuses on doom and gloom. By some estimates, only 3% of climate stories highlight solutions. That’s why Grist shifted several years ago to make solutions-oriented journalism a core tenet of their work. Grist will produce and publish 40 stories over the year through two decorated staff writers (Matt Simon and Tik Root) on their Solutions Desk. In addition, they’ll invest in the broad distribution of these, and other solutions-oriented stories published by Grist journalists covering specific beats like food, water, and public health or specific states like Georgia, North Carolina, and Michigan. This work will reach millions of people every month, and inspire people to take action. It will drive the conversation in media through their content appearing in hundreds of outlets every month, and it will influence people and institutions of power. In doing so, Grist will push forward a nationwide cultural shift in which more Americans demand and engage in climate progress and the energy transition, pushing elected officials, the private sector, and their communities to act now.
