In an era marked by climate change, racial injustice, and rapid technological shifts, addressing today’s complex challenges demands new ways of educating emerging leaders. In response, Seattle University (SU) will expand a successful pilot into an ambitious three-tiered Curriculum of Place, embedding place-based experiential learning at the heart of an SU education. This initiative will ensure that all students apply interdisciplinary academic skills to equitable solutions for issues they will face as future leaders and global citizens and will enhance students’ academic success and college persistence. First, as part of SU’s core curriculum, all entering undergraduates will take a new Signature Seminar course that analyzes global issues through their local impacts and engages with community-driven social change efforts. Second, every undergraduate will complete a community engaged learning (CEL) course of their choice. Finally, via a new curricular pathway, students will have the option to pursue a CEL graduation distinction. The Curriculum of Place will guide students through a developmental process, building their capacity to address urgent challenges locally and beyond, and providing a model for other institutions aiming to develop leaders for a just and humane world.
