Business leaders today have tremendous power to impact our world. With that power comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, the business curriculum spends too little time helping students gain wisdom on how and when to apply business techniques. We need to establish an ethos of steering commerce to make a profit while serving society. Supported by a prior AVDF grant, the University of Michigan has been providing an immersive cohort experience that helps business students discern the idea of management as a calling or vocation. Leveraging this success, Notre Dame and Michigan are collaborating to share this program with business faculty nationally to create similar purpose-driven programs. Suzanne Shanahan from the Institute for Social Concerns at Notre Dame brings deep and broad experiences in creating inter-disciplinary programs for curriculum innovation. Andrew Hoffman from the Ross School of Business at Michigan brings a depth of experience in teaching/researching about business as a positive force in the world and implementing the Management as a Calling program for business graduate and undergraduate students. This collaboration will cultivate a national network of educators dedicated to integrating a sense of purpose/vocation alongside traditional business metrics.
