Through its Athenaeum lectures and discussions, talks, conferences, workshops, and its Open Academy initiative, Claremont McKenna College has cultivated an environment in which constructive dialogue, viewpoint diversity, and free speech are taken seriously and practiced consistently. The project seeks to move beyond extra- and co-curricular programming and examine what the components of a purposeful and effective curriculum that places these values at its core would look like. Claremont McKenna College will convene a group of faculty from across the disciplines to answer this question and begin designing courses and modules based on these principles, regardless of their subject matter. While participants will design courses that they themselves will teach, modules will be offered to any faculty willing to test them in their teaching. After an initial trial, the college will reconvene the group, as well as others interested in joining from the other Claremont Colleges, to evaluate the trial run and work on revising these offerings. Eventually, the college hopes to host annual retreats, in which faculty members from other institutions can find out about these core CMC values and the ways they could apply them to their own teaching.
