St. Olaf College will  create a difficult discussion guidebook and workshops to promote better discussions in the college classroom. The guidebook will use vivid “graphic novel” style illustrations to capture the tone of intense discussions, and will offer pedagogical guidance to help faculty lead these conversations. St. Olaf will also create companion materials (including videography) to facilitate dissemination workshops to train faculty on difficult discussions. This work builds on a pilot project completed in the summer of 2025 at St. Olaf College. A group of faculty at St. Olaf and the University of Minnesota developed a set of archetypal challenging classroom discussions, rooted in conflicts of politics and emotional student disclosures, and created pedagogical tools to address each challenge. The college will expand on this work in three ways. First, St. Olaf will convene faculty development workshops to promote the findings from the pilot program and solicit feedback from workshop participants. Second, drawing on feedback from these workshops, the college will expand the resources already developed. Third, the college will disseminate resources by offering new in-person dissemination workshops at other colleges and universities. St. Olaf will also make digital copies of the guidebook available on our website.
