Educators strive like Aristotle’s ideal legislator to “make citizens good by forming habits in them.” The Habits of Discourse is a pedagogical project aimed at setting specifically the habits of civic engagement aright, starting in the classroom. Through focused interventions that routinize the mode by which students and faculty alike approach arguments and engage in difficult discussions, the activities of the project have the potential to make braver, more open, and more humble citizens. The project aims to repeatedly guide students through intellectual and affective practices meant to instill these habits. The intellectual work consists in argument visualization, use of novel AI tools that help students work out the implications of a set of premises, and practice in statistical thinking, emphasizing correlation vs. causation, sampling, selection bias, etc. The affective work comes from a sequence of carefully curated encounters with controversial ideas, in structured debate about these topics, and in meeting (looking in the eye of) individuals who espouse controversial views in good faith. This grant will be used to train faculty to lead these courses, bring speakers to the classroom, and host public events to show the fruits of better discourse to the community.
