Skidmore College is poised to set a new standard for civil discourse as a leader in liberal arts education and dialogue. Through SkidMORE Discourse: Meaningful Open Respectful Engagement (M.O.R.E.), the college will create a campus where civil discourse is not an occasional aspiration but a daily reality. The college will build Skidmore’s strengths in creativity, curiosity, and collaboration to move from dialogue as a program to dialogue as a culture. This initiative positions every student to graduate with the skills and confidence needed to engage constructively across difference, preparing them to lead lives of consequence. Students and faculty have asked for more opportunities to practice and teach dialogue, and M.O.R.E. will answer that call. Organized around three mutually reinforcing domains of campus life; In the Classroom, In Residence, and In Community; the initiative will expand faculty development, create new courses, launch an advising model, embed peer-led dialogue in residential life, and convene diverse voices through a national symposium, speaker series, and forums. By embedding dialogue across the classroom, residence halls, and community life, M.O.R.E. will make civil discourse a hallmark of Skidmore’s identity, a defining strength of the liberal arts, and a model for Civil Campus Live.
