Polarization and self-censorship on U.S. campuses undermine higher education’s role in preparing students for democratic citizenship. Emory University’s Progress & Pluralism curriculum tackles this challenge by embedding evidence-based civil discourse training into a credit-bearing policy curriculum. The program features a four-course sequence pairing rigorous policy analysis with pluralistic reasoning, plus a humanistic entry point where students encounter philosophical frameworks that structure policy debates. Designed for replication across institutions, the modular curriculum includes integration modules that extend reach to 300+ students in large introductory courses. Students complete the Constructive Dialogue Institute’s Perspectives modules and the Greater Good Science Center’s Bridging Differences exercises, participate in peer-facilitated discussions led by Progress & Pluralism Fellows, and apply skills through campus salons and debates. Deliverables include an open-source Dialogue Toolkit, a behavioral evaluation protocol advancing measurement rigor, scholarly publications, and curriculum materials for peer institutions. The program will cultivate graduates who engage respectfully across ideological differences and evaluate policy with empathy and evidence.
